It Could Be Over Quickly
...Read the April 6 headline of the Phil. Daily Inquirer which referred to the Gulf War 2. Yeah right but at what cost? Below the same paper a PDI researcher wrote "Another casualty of war: Ancient history" and listed some of Iraq's more popular archaeological and historical sites such as:
Nineveh- Biblical city which was the Assyrian capital in the 7th century BC. The shrine of the prophet Jonah is a stone's throw away from its walls and gates.
Babylon- The commercial and cultural center of the Middle East for almost 2000 years. Famous for its hanging gardens. The Etemenanki tower could be the biblical tower of Babel.
Ur- The ancient Sumerian city is known in the Bible as Ur of the Chaldeans, the birthplace of Abraham.
Nimrud- Known as Cala in the Bible. Another one of the great cities of Assyria.
Uruk (Erech)- Uruk was the home of Gilgamesh and is mentioned in the Bible (Gen. 10:10).
Most of the other sites unlisted here are unexplored. If these were damaged then we would have lost some clues on how Western civilization began thousands of years ago. What a pity...
