Night Cap

November 25, Friday

Hmm... We finally got to spend a night out on the town... It was a cup of cafe Americano for me while Jerry had a couple of beers at Table 7. It's great to be able to do this once in a while....

Jerry and I were on our way to the bank at the Cebu Business Park when we saw at a distance, a tall column of black smoke. We tuned in to the AM radio where frantic news accounts were being aired about the fire that apparently broke in Mabolo. We were no where near the area but we could see the intensity of the the fire from where we were parked. The pics are mine but the write-up below was swiped from SunStar Cebu Daily's account of what happened....

Two fires broke out in Cebu City yesterday, bringing to eight the number of fires this month.

Some P600,000 worth of property was lost in the fire that struck Sitio Sindulan, Barangay Mabolo at 1:21 p.m.

No one was reported hurt, but 71 houses were razed and 105 families were left homeless.

Two hours earlier, the cargo hold of a passenger ship caught fire while it was docked at Pier 2 yesterday morning. Damage was pegged at P5,000.

It must have been really sad for the families who lost their homes and property but the good thing is nobody was hurt.

There's No Stopping Christmas

After work today, I saw the first time Asia Town turned on the newly-installed tivoli lights that adorned the trees that lined the avenue. A happy feeling overcame me and I couldn't help but smile and hurriedly snap a blurry pic right before I boarded the car... As the song goes: "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..."

Finally

November 17, Thursday - We Are Officially Open

After a fast-track construction and build-up phase and harrowing trips to SEC, we have finally had our office blessed last Thursday. The preparation leading to it did not really flow smoothly and without headaches, but we are glad to see what 4-months ago was just an idea, is now an operational and viable business.

Yey!

Returning the Visit (Last Installment)

November 12, Saturday

Jerry and I took the extra time to mix official trip with pleasure and personal business. We spent the morning up to the early afternoon meeting with a supplier, checking out the new Greenhills Theatre Mall, and having our late lunch at Teriyaki Boy.

When we got home at a little before dinner time, everyone was there including sis and bro-in-law as well as Ma and Pa. After a quick meal, we decided to spend the last night in Manila at....

November 13, Sunday

It was a perfect day to fly home to Cebu but not without hearing mass at Our Lady of Fatima where the homily was delivered by a straightforward and articulate priest. It was also one of those rare moments that I was with my sis May and our hubs Jerry and Rommel. It felt like it was only a few years ago when we would attend mass with Ma and Pa, getting up early to make it to the 11am schedule inspite of lack of sleep from the previous night's partying (or cramming?). Hehehe.... Now we were there with our partners. Sigh.... time flies...

Soon it was time to part... as in the past trips where we would be brought by everyone (if schedules allow) to the airport, loved ones were there to see us off, even chubby niece Zia, as if we were going abroad. Haha!

My short 3-day trip to Manila saw me in 3 malls (Podium, F Tiangge, Greenhills), Cinnabon, Yellow Cab, a Mediterranean resto (Cafe Med), an Italian resto (Capisce), a Japanese resto (Teriyaki Boy), and 3 Starbucks outlets (Metrowalk, Las Pinas and Alabang) and with plenty of bonding time with loved ones.

Returning the Visit (Part 1)

I was almost ready to call it a day last week about 6pm, Tuesday when my cellphone rang. It was Cindy from our Ortigas office and she wanted to hold some sort of alignment meeting in the areas of Admin, Accounting and HR. We tried discussing over the phone. A few items were covered but there were more to be discussed. I half-jokingly (half-meant) told her why not let me come over so I could meet with them in person and that the discussion would be more effective. I was pleasantly surprised when she said yes and asked if I could be there the following day, a Wednesday. Haha! If it were that easy, I would have agreed. But considering all factors like the kids, the house, the plane tickets and flight schedules, it was more convenient to fly instead on Thursday.

The following day, we made all the arrangements and moved to my mom-in-law's house where we left the kids for the next few days while Jerry and I went on a short trip to Manila. See pictures and short recap of the past week...

November 10, Thursday

Jerry and I took the 730am flight out of Cebu. I texted Mang Lucio, the company driver, if he would be able to pick us up but he said that the two cars were subject to color-coding for that day. That being the case, we just took a rented car to my parents house, borrowed their car and drove to Ortigas.

It was actually a big surprise for Ma and Pa to see me barging into the house without any word of my trip days before. I intended to surprise them actually and was glad that they were happy to see me.

At work, I was toured around the office and was introduced to the team. I met with the people who I am going to interface with and met the newest client who was in town. We were treated to lunch and dessert at Cafe Med and Cinnabon at the Podium. It was my first time to see the Podium and I felt like a "probinsyana" ogling at the class A boutiques that lined the mall. Hehehe...

The management team knocked off late and invited us for dinner at Metrowalk, another new place for me, where we dined at Capisce and had coffee at Starbucks. I enjoyed my shrimp risotto immensely and was slightly regretful that I didn't have any more space for dessert. Oh well....

It was actually a long but productive day. I had fun too.

Night out

November 11, Friday

I waited for the laptop that was supposed to be issued to me by the company. So we were in the Ortigas area waiting for the advise of the IT specialist when to pick it up. While there, Ma, Pa, May and Rommel were with Jerry and me checking out yet another new mall/tiangge called F Tiangge. I bought a pair of mules for myself and Ma. Hehehe. That was my first shopping expense for this trip.

After getting the laptop, May and Rommel went ahead to go to work. We were on our way back home and decided to drop by Yellow Cab and Starbucks Las Pinas.

After the short visit of Pa & Ma, you'd think we were left to enjoy what remained of the back-to-back long weekends (Oct 29-Nov 1 and Nov 4-6), but no. We had a few activities still lined up and two of these are captured in the following pictures:

1. The Jesuits' Athletics Meet (JAM) where Matt is one of the players for their grade school's varsity team...

Pa & Ma's Cebu Visit - Part 3

Yey, there's a slight lull at work today and the speedy E1 internet connection will allow me to post these pictures in a jiffy... Here are more pics of the short trip of Pa & Ma in Cebu...

BO'S COFFEE CLUB, IT PARK - CAVEAT EMPTOR! (Buyers Beware!)

When ordering my coffee, I normally want it short. And usually, I would appreciate an extra mile from the attendant if he/she goes out of his or her way to educate me as to the different kinds of drinks/ food/ treats/ promo they offer OR if he/she takes the time to inform me of the different cup sizes OR if he/she asks me if I'm willing to pay extra for decaf or for other request/s.

To me, it's actually bad customer service for an attendant to just presume that all customers go through the menu. More so if the attendant wittingly tricks the innocent customer into buying something for more. What do I mean by this? Let me recount what happened last week.

We were at my office for a quick look-see when Ma decided that she and Pa drop by the nearby Bo's Coffee Club at IT Park. I said I'd follow them. A few minutes later, I entered the shop and saw Ma putting down on their table the newly ordered cups of coffee and 2 orders of tuna turnover. I sat down with them and started chatting when my eyes rested on the receipt lying on the tray.

I picked it up and was dumbfounded when I saw that they paid P245 for what would normally cost me less than P200. "Ma, did you order a tall cup of capuccino and a tall cup of mocha?", I asked quite perplexed that they could consume that much coffee. "No. I just said capuccino and mocha", Ma answered quite sheepishly. "And did the attendant ask if you wanted tall cups?" I sounded a bit annoyed. "No. I was even surprised myself when I was asked to pay P245", Ma said sensing that I was now irritated.

I reviewed all items on the receipt and saw that they were charged for P15 each for ordering decaf. I knew the answer but I still wanted to make sure when I asked Ma, "Did the attendant say she was charging you an additional P15/cup for decaf?". Of course the answer was again a "no". After attempting to control my temper and when I felt I was in control of myself, I stood up to walk over to the counter.

"Excuse me, do you really give tall cups to customers who don't specify any cup size?", I was calm but seething inside when I asked the lady. "Ma'am our regular size is a tall cup", the attendant replied. "Okay, (even if I saw on the menu that they also serve short cups), but do you give the customer that option to choose his cup size or you just go on punching the order without asking?" At this, the attendant was already flushed and kept silent. "And do you confirm with the customer if they are willing to pay the extra P15 for decaf?" I went on, enjoying the awkward look on the lady's face.

"Next time, do ask and confirm with your customers first lest they decide not to pay for something they did not order."

I gave one look at the lady and the male attendant by the counter and calmly sauntered out of the shop.

End of story.

Pa & Ma's Cebu Visit - Part 2

NOVEMBER 1

As a tradition, we all troop to the cemetery every year on Nov 1 to visit our dearly departed. Last Nov. 1, we celebrated mass in the Matugas family crypt together with close and distant relatives.

Nov 1 mass at Cempark

The late morning mass ended at noon and everybody in attendance was invited to lunch at the Matugas family residence.

My new (shorter) Christmas tree is upBy evening, after a quiet dinner at home with our guests, Pa & Ma, we proceeded to put up the new Christmas tree. I used to have a 6ft tall tree but after buying a kiddie cabinet for Jake early this year, I now don't have an extra space to move the round table to make way for the tree. I decided to buy a shorter one and set it up on the round coffee table that I covered in red and green.

Then to cap a full day, Pa, Ma, Jerry and I went around the city looking for a place to have coffee or just to unwind. Being a holiday, several establishments were closed. One of the few that stayed open was the Wineshop where we decided to spend a couple of hours munching on Spanish chorizo and sipping red wine...

The pleasant exchange of stories, jokes and serious stuff among the four of us was something I will hold dearly in my memory. Isn't it just great to spend time with loved ones? Here's hoping we all get to spend more of these special moments in the future.

Pa & Ma's Cebu Visit - Part 1

I'm feeling lazy to post. But the numerous pictures I took of the occasions for the past several days are egging me to compose... Thus, I am finally doing it....

OCTOBER 30 - MY BIRTHDAY

What a great way to start a beautiful day with a series of cute shots of Jake and the new balls I bought for him. Yes, when it's my birthday, I feel extra-generous to share the blessings by shopping for my loved ones instead of buying new stuff for myself. For Jake, these balls, 100 pieces in all, are a joy to play with. These set me back for P600 but instead of paying P180/visit to the kiddie play station at Ayala Mall, buying these was a better idea and great subject for the camera too.

As I was planning on how to celebrate the occasion, treating my family to a sumptuous Chinese buffet lunch at the Grand Convention crossed my mind.

I decided it would be best to just bring the good food to Mama Sol's house, share an intimate dinner and celebrate with my family and special guests...
