Caution: Student Driver

Matt's first attempt at driving was made into a family affair...
@->--

Why we thought it was a good idea to teach 13 year old Matt to drive during the height of typhoon Seniang last weekend is beyond me. :D But then again, the road at IT Park was empty when Matt, under Jerry's tutelage was on the wheel driving around the block for a few rounds. He was all gawky and nervous but evidently excited at this new prospect.

Jerry taught him important pointers which Matt realized was a responsibility on his part more than it is for show.

Since our vehicle is automatic, the whole experience was only to give Matt a taste of things to come in a few years.

  3. wow! another milestone in Matt's life! ang suwerte naman niya at tinuturuan siya ng daddy niya.

I learn driving on my own, sneaking behind my parents back to take private lessons, coz I know they will not agree. Tapos nung may license na ako, I just showed it to them and ask to borrow the car [with the driver beside me], pumayag naman.

  4. HI JO!
I was toying about the idea for weeks now. Then I asked Matt if he has a friend/classmate who has tried driving. When he answered "no", I told him: "How do you want to be the 1st to try it?"

Of course his eyes lit up! Now he has something to brag about. Kinunsinti ano? Hehehe....

  5. well, just like JO, sneaking the car out is also Linnor and mine's experience. But we only were able to reach the gates as the car wasnt cooperative at all. oh well. eventually, during the height of the EDSA revolution, we had our first taste behind the wheel. I was legally 16 then....and not 13....unlike Matthew. I think it's a good experience and a great story to tell, but IMHO, it's too early for him :)

  6. HI JUNNIE!
Now that you mentioned our sneaking of the car, do you remember the mishaps? Yaaak! I could remember 3 - I hit (& run) a parked Nova at Fernando's, I hit the house gate, and the motorcycle of Alpha's visitor. Ngeks.

Oh but you had your share as well ha. Do you recall the time you were signalling left but you turned right? That was hilarious!

Yeah, I know, it's a bit too early for Matt. It was just something new and like you said, a great story to tell.

BTW, legal age for driving in the Phils is 18 not 16 right?

  7. legal age for driving? it's 16, but only with a Professional Driver on the passenger seat. i remember then that you are given a paper Student Permit for it and when you've driven 6 months, it gets to be a hard-card type license di ba?

fortunately, i havent had any bangga ever since.

(although there was a period that I had 3 accidents in 3 months. the car was in and out of the talyer)

  9. Hi Linnor,
Kumusta? Though it had been quite some time since my last comment, believe me, I regularly open your site to see the latest blog. I enjoy it esp. the photos you put out. I keep hoping that I would recognize someone but none so far (well, except for the vice mayor who is a family friend). Anyway, seeing Matt in front of the wheels at such an early age brought back memories. I, too, learned how to drive at a very early age, 11. Our car was stick shift pa gyud. It was nerve wracking needless to say but exciting at the same time. I guess I was too arisgada. Older sis took me for a spin at the reclamation area. Unlike today, hardly anything going on on the site during that time so it was pretty safe; my only concern was not to go in the ditch. hehehe! Merry christmas to you and your family.

  10. hi, i think it's way too early for a 13 yr old to drive. my concern is for his safety and pedestrians.

it may be cool to have the bragging rights to be the first to drive, but that also means you might be encouraging his friends to try it too.

  11. HI JUNNIE!
I remember taking a written exam too together with the other drivers. Hehehe... Yes those were the days. Do they still do that pa kaya? I'm proud to say "di dinoktor" ang license ko. :D

    HI LESLEE!
Ang layo ng Batangas to Manila! I hope he drives carefully...

    HI BEBOT!
Driving is such a big deal when you're young no? I was like that too, begging Pa to teach me to drive during summer breaks. He relented only one summer when I was about 15 years old. He said I should attend a driving school when I'm of legal age. That was what I did. ;)

    Happy holidays!

    HI ANONYMOUS!
I perfectly agree. He won't be driving for real until he gets his formal driving lessons. I'll make sure of that. *wink* Thanks for the visit.

  14. Hello again Linnor!

Nostalgia Manila will be doing a new weekly segment in 2007 called Nostalgia Bloggista, which will be featuring our very own Pinoy Bloggers answering these 5 simple questions:

    1. Where did you grow up, and what made that place special?

    2. What was your favorite tv show, cartoon, or children's show growing up? What did you like about these shows that made them your favorite?

    3. Favorite music group or artist? Most memorable song?

    4. Share with our readers one of your fondest memories of growing up.

    5. What do you miss from back then that's not available today?

If you've like to be featured, please email back these answers (nostalgiamanilamail[at]yahoo[dot]com), along with the URL of your blog, and a photo of you when you were young, preferably a photo of when you were a kid, or teenager. The younger the better! ;) Since it's the holiday season, there's a lot of time to look for cool old photos. Nostalgia Manila will be resuming regular posting schedule after new years.

We will feature you, along with a link to your blog, inviting our readers to check out your blog. We hope that you participate in this new fun feature!

    Happy Holidays!
