Jakester's Dictionary

Kung Hei Fat Choi!
Jake is 1 year and 10 months old. And like most tots his age, he has accumulated a number of words that he has learned from those he frequently interacts with. He talks to us in his usual gibberish coupled with hand gestures. And over time, we have come to know what some of his "words" mean. Let me share some of his more common words...

Jerry - Papa
Linnor - Mama
Matt - Mach, or most of the time when confused, Kai
Kyle - Kai
Lolo - Yoyo
Lola - Yoya
A-ma - A-ma (Grandma in Chinese)
A-ko - A-tu (A-ko is aunt in Chinese)
Juju - Dudu
Cathy - Tah-tee
milk - mik
fish - wish
turtle - turtah
dog - doh
cat - ngi-yao
cat or car - kah
star or car - tah
bird - wa'wa' - "quack quack"
close - on
stand - tan
down - dan
carry - popo (carry in Chinese)
fireworks/gun - bangbang
wow - wow
yey - yey
airplane - peplen
amen - ah mi
no - no
ball - boh
basketball - ba'boh
drink - dink
bye - bye

Coming from both Chinese and Filipino families who speak Fookienese, Cebuano, Tagalog and English, Jake's vocabulary is clearly a mixture of all.

From all of us:

Happy Chinese New Year (Year of the "DOH")!

  5. I like Jake's version of the word 'cat'...cute. At this age, I think, they can easily imitate the sounds they hear. My Zia sometimes call me Mama or Mi (for May)...her Lolo, Yoyo or Di (for Eddy)...her Yaya, Ya or Ita (for Rita). Funny talaga!

  12. I think Jake really meant it---calling me YOYO (for Lolo) because I really am like that to him, a yoyo---now he sees me; now he doesn't. Maybe I should stay longer in one place, be in Cebu for six months and another six months in Manila so that I should not look like a YOYO to him.

Kiss Jake for me and the other two Bugoys!

  13. HI JERRY!
He's at that stage. I just hope he skips being "terrible at two". :D

    HI JO!
Have a great year of the Dog! :D Thanks!

    HI BEA!
Amazing seeing him grow in my blog no? :D Thanks!

    HI PAPARAZZI!
I strongly agree! But how come nawala sa equation ang "be in Toronto for a month and US for another month"? Dapat 5 mos Manila + 5 mos Cebu + 1 mo. US + 1 mo Toronto! :D 'Gagalit si Junnie nyan. Hehehe...
